Dog Treats

Have you ever made treats for your dogs?  Here, we present some easy to make treats -- some that will save you money.  If your dog has allergies, this is one way to create treats that he/she will be able to enjoy.  Use the same ideas as you would for cooking for humans -- too much fat and/or sugar is not good for the dogs.  Of course, never use chocolate in your dogs' treats.

Homemade Frosty Paws
32 ounces vanilla or plain yogurt
1 banana, mashed
2 Tablespoons peanut butter
2 Tablespoons honey

Blend all ingredients thoroughly.  Distribute evenly in 3 ounce paper cups or ice cube trays or Ice Cream cups.  Freeze.  This recipe can save you bunches of money over buying these treats in the freezer section.  If you use Ice Cream cups, the dogs can eat the whole thing -- less mess.

Liver Dog Treats
1 lb. liver - calf, chicken or beef
 2 eggs
 1 cup cornmeal
 1 cup flour
 garlic to taste

Process raw liver and eggs in processor - add garlic, gradually add the flour/cornmeal until well blended - pour into a baking dish or cookied sheet and bake for 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.  Same as above, cut into squares - refrigerate or freeze.  You can substitute canned tuna or chicken (about 10 oz) for the liver.

These make great training treats -- you can cut the pieces as small as you like.

Peeny Butter Biscuits
1 c. flour (white or whole wheat)
3/4 c. peanut butter
1/2 c. water
2 Tbsp. honey
1 tsp. cinnamon

Place peanut butter honey, cinnamon and water in a small pan over medium heat. Stir quickly until peanut butter melts and all ingredients are blended. Put flour into another mixing bowl and slowly fold in the liquid mixture. Mix well and roll out the dough on a floured surface and use cookie cutters to cut cookies from the dough. Reflour as necessary. Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 25 minutes. the turn off heat and let the cookies harden (but don't let them burn). Cool completely.

There are several mixes available commercially.  Bake Your Dog a Bone is one that I've used personally -- pretty good reviews (from Kukla, Jack and Wills).
